Hooping With Confidence

Does that sound like you? Have you caught yourself uttering those words to a well-meaning friend who wanted you to come with them to a local hoop dance class?

Later on if I wanted to work on something I didn’t quite grasp, I always had the option to go back and look it over in the recorded video, or if I couldn’t make a class at all it was there for me when I had the time to. What do I get from Fearless Beginner?

What will I learn in Fearless Beginner?

This is a core-hooping class for absolute beginners. We’ll be focusing on manipulating the hoop on your body – waist, chest, shoulders, legs.

We’ll go through six weeks of instruction, each class an hour long, covering core hooping topics in detail.

NOTE: Even though this is technically a beginner’s class, any off-body hoopers looking to really ramp up their on-body game will definitely find this class valuable as well!

Week 1: Basic waist hooping

  • I’ll introduce how to waist hoop FROM THE GROUND UP. If you’ve never been able to keep a hoop up before, you’ll learn it in this class.
  • We’ll cover the 3 key components you need to get your hoop going and keep it moving around the waist.
  • We’ll study why some people struggle to keep their hoop moving, where they’re going wrong, and how to fix it.

Week 2: Waist Control

  • We’ll take what we learned last week and solidify it, learning how to focus in on your entire core to control the hoop.
  • You’ll start learning how to be aware of the hoop’s timing, laying down the groundwork for everything else you’ll ever do in your hoop.
  • You’ll learn how to reverse your hoop and the value of hooping in both directions.

Week 3: Lifts

  • We’ll look at two different ways to lift the hoop off your body.
  • We’ll break down how to combine lifts and drops into the classic vortex move, step-by-step.
  • You’ll learn what to do with your hoop once you’ve got it in the air.

From my hours of poring over various YouTube hoop tutorials, Jess was already my favorite teacher, and I was so excited at the opportunity to learn from her in an actual “class” setting.  I love the live online format – you get the feeling of really being a part of a group, in a class, but without having to leave your house, and without the in-person pressure and nervousness!  After the first class, where I was too shy to turn on my camera, I really enjoyed seeing everyone else and having Jess able to see me and give me immediate feedback.  Being able to interact with Jess as an instructor, and other hoop students from all over, is really cool, and gives a real feeling of connection.

Both Jess, and her online classes, get my enthusiastic thumbs up (and I am a picky, picky, lady ;]).

Week 4: Chest hooping

  • We’ll talk about why chest hooping seems impossible, and what to do about it.
  • You’ll take what you’ve learned on the waist and learn how to apply it to hooping at the chest.
  • You’ll learn the difference between “chest hooping” and “breaks and paddles”, and how one can help you learn the other.

Week 5: Angles

  • We’ll take a close, detailed look at two ways to angle hoop at the waist – “Earth Angle” (facing down) and “Sky Angle” (facing up).
  • You’ll discover one is easier than the other, why that’s okay, and how to work on the trickier one.
  • You’ll learn how to transition between “Earth” and “Sky” and back again!

Week 6: Leg Hooping & Review

  • You’ll learn the basics of leg hooping and how to gain as much control at your legs as you now have on your waist.
  • We’ll go over everything from the past 5 weeks and learn how to put it all together to build your personal flow.
  • You’ll have a new-found confidence with hooping. Congratulations, you’re now FEARLESS.

When I see Jess hoop, I think, “I wish I could hoop like that.”
When I see her teach I think, “I can do that!”
She has such a playful and comfortable way of teaching and she’s great at breaking the skills down into bite sized chunks.
You never have to feel like a failure or feel bad in her classes, it’s all just fun and playful and before you know it you’re hooping like a badass.

Why learn from Jess?

Teaching beginners is what I love. I’ve been teaching hoop dance since 2009, and my number one favorite thing remains guiding someone who thought they couldn’t keep a hoop up to performing feats they never thought possible.

Beginners are my true love. I want to show you what you’re capable of, because I know it even if you don’t. I’ve seen too many successes to not believe in you.

Even if you’re thinking you just can’t do it…you don’t have the hips, the energy, the youth, the body…I know you can.

What do I need for Fearless Beginner?

  •  8 to 10 square feet of space (the more the better, but you really can get away with hooping in a small space!)

  • At least one big, heavy hoop and one smaller, lighter hoop. (Whatever you’re thinking is your biggest hoop, chances are you’d benefit from a bigger one. One of the most common struggles I see beginners deal with is trying to learn on a hoop that’s too small.

  • An internet connection and a laptop or mobile device.

  • The Zoom app, a quick download for Android and iOS. You can snag it either beforehand or at the first class.

  • An open mind and a willingness to learn.

Why join Fearless Beginner instead of learning from free tutorials?

First of all, there is absolutely nothing wrong with learning from free tutorials. It’s how I learned. I have even created a free series myself which I consider a good program to use to learn basic hooping fundamentals.

However, my hoop practice improved exponentially once I was able to get in front of a teacher!

Live instruction provides so many benefits that free tutorials can’t touch. Here are just a few:

  • You’ll learn faster. While it’s totally possible to cobble together a good program from free videos, you’ll have a guided curriculum when attending Fearless Beginner. You’ll learn in six hour-long classes what might otherwise take you months!

  • You can ask questions. You’ll have plenty of time before, during, and after classes to ask me about whatever you’re struggling with. A video can’t talk back if you ask it something. Sure, you can leave a comment, but it may take a while to get an answer, if at all. Plus…

  • A video can’t check your form. You might be doing something subtle you aren’t even aware of that’s throwing your whole game off, making you want to throw in the towel. But I can save you months of struggle by noticing your problems and giving you a simple fix!

  • You’ll get more practice time in. When you’re studying solo, you might try something a few times, then set it aside. In Fearless Beginner, when you come to class, you’re getting a full hour of skill drills devoted to making you a better hooper.

  • You’ll get personalized feedback. Videos are made to help as many people as possible. But in Fearless Beginner, you’ll have me there to help guide you, so you get the best advice specific to you.

Jess is fun and funny, and completely approachable.  I never felt like she would think a question I had was too dumb or too obvious, and her instruction is generally clear and easy to follow.  More than once, Jess’ way of describing a movement or action really helped it click for me.
